Introduction to the Rákoskeresztúri New Public Cemetery
Budapest legnagyobb kiterjedésű temetkezési helye a X. kerületben, Kőbányán elhelyezkedő Új Köztemető, amely 207 hektáros területen fekszik. A hatalmas sírkert 301 parcellára oszlik, és becslések szerint közel hárommillió elhunyt számára nyújt végső nyughelyet. Története egészen 1886-ig nyúlik vissza, amikor az első gyászszertartást követően itt helyezték örök nyugalomra az első elhunytat. A temető rendezett, geometrikus úthálózatát és parcelláinak alaprajzi elrendezését Czigler Győző műépítész tervei alapján alakították ki 1903-ban. Az intézmény a BKM Budapesti Közművek Nonprofit Zrt. – BTI Temetkezési Divízió gondos üzemeltetésében áll, amely felel a méltóságteljes környezet fenntartásáért.
Historical and architectural values
From an architectural perspective, the cemetery is also an extremely rich and significant memorial site. The entrance building complex was created based on the plans of Ármin Hegedűs, the sculptural decorations are the work of Géza Maróti, and the mosaics visible on the facade originate from the famous workshop of Miksa Róth. In the early 1900s, the characteristic niche-style burial vaults bearing Italian stylistic features were built, lending a special atmosphere to the cemetery. The mortuary and cold storage facility were completed in the 1920s based on the plans of Sándor Wossola, meeting the funeral needs of the era. The area also contains two military plots where fallen heroes from more than forty nations rest, and it was once regarded as Europe's second largest military cemetery. Its historical significance is further enhanced by the fact that victims of the reprisals following the 1956 revolution, including Prime Minister Imre Nagy, were buried here in plot 301.
Funeral services and options
In addition to traditional burial in the ground, the cemetery also offers urn burial and the leasing of grave sites. Mortuary and cold storage services assist relatives in bidding a dignified farewell. The first crematorium opened in 1968, and in 2006 the section called Urna Pantheon was handed over, providing a resting place for urns in a special, crypt-like arrangement. The cemetery also contains the graves of numerous famous and historical figures, which further underscores its cultural significance. Accurate orientation is essential for visitors, and knowledge of the plot and row numbers is necessary to locate grave sites. The cemetery management is committed to the care of the burial grounds, the preservation of traditions, and the proper information of visitors. The maintenance of this memorial site and the provision of services contribute to ensuring that mourners can remember their loved ones in peaceful circumstances. The area's infrastructure and spacious road network allow for the comfortable reception and parking of large numbers of visitors. The operation provides all necessary conditions for maintaining the memorial site in a beautiful and orderly manner, as well as for the continuous support of relatives.
