The History and Significance of the Old Cemetery

The Budaörs Old Cemetery is one of Pest County's outstanding historical and cultural memorial sites, deeply rooted in the past of the local and Hungarian German community. The burial ground was opened in 1778 and served as the community's burial place for centuries, until the mid-20th century. This site is not merely a cemetery but a tangible piece of the past that preserves the memory of the generations who lived here. The more than 1,400 headstones found in the area bear the unique stylistic features of stone carving from the Buda region, with most dating from the 19th and 20th centuries. The oldest still-visible tombstone dates from 1782, bearing witness to the cemetery's ancient past. Walking through the burial ground, visitors can embark on a kind of journey through time, learning about contemporary burial customs and the artistry of local master stone carvers.

Memorial Park and Place of Remembrance

In the late 1950s, the cemetery was closed, and burials were officially discontinued in 1980. In the decades that followed, the fate of the area was uncertain, but from the 1990s onward, its deliberate transformation into a memorial park began. This process aimed to restore the area and bring it back to a dignified state. The park is now a place of quiet remembrance and respect for the past, where relatives and visitors can pay their respects in peace. The care and maintenance of the area ensure that memories are preserved in a worthy environment for future generations. During the park's development, special attention was paid to preserving the historical headstones and honoring the spirit of the place.

Cultural and Sacred Values

The cemetery is not only famous for its tombstones but also for the sacred and cultural structures found within its grounds. Here stands the Csulits Chapel, erected in 1862, which from the 1980s also hosted ceremonies of the Greek Catholic community. The chapel's construction is tied to a deeply personal family tragedy, further enhancing the site's symbolic value. In 2006, the National Expulsion Memorial was unveiled here, serving as a painful reminder of the deportation of the Hungarian German population. The Old Cemetery of Budaörs has thus become an important stage of collective memory, where personal grief and historical past intertwine. The site plays a significant role in preserving the local community's identity and maintaining historical awareness. The continuous renewal of the cemetery and the associated Calvary Hill reflects the dedication of local foundations and the community.
